I am drawn to children's paintings because of how
vibrant they are. They are teaming with the vitality of life, of exploration,
of curiosity, spontaneity, oblivious to conventions and formality. What
a contrast to observe the spontaneity of the painting against the very
controlled and structured technique of tapestry.
I chose to recreate this child's painting because
I thought it was such a happy work. I also think it is a good representation
of what children have to teach us, as adults. Through their art, they
reconnect us to the sheer joy of doing, of action, of being. I am awed
that to this child, this painting is representative of Sailor Moon.
A child's conscious, aware and rational mind seems to be intertwined
with its imagination, so much so that they appear to be inseparable.
I have observed this repeatedly over the many years I have taught art
to children of all ages. In this painting I perceive a child who is
given the freedom to be a child, to express its vitality unfettered
and unrestrained which in turn, I believe, contributes to this child's
healthy adaptive growth and development. When I look back upon my own
childhood I have no recollection of this kind of joy and vitality. Through
recreating a tapestry of this painting, I have traveled an imaginary
journey wherein I was able to recreate a happy childhood place so that
I could heal and move on. |
