Coming Home For both Effervescent Ascent and Coming Home I was drawn to the image of the solitary bird because its image, frozen in a moment of action, captured, in a figurative sense, our spiritual journey in this life. The visual and emotion impact of the solitary bird in motion was/is for me a powerful one. The bird, captured while navigating its flight in 'Coming Home' conveys, in its solitude, its determination to arrive at its destination. This parallels our own aloneness in this world in finding our way, even though we may be surrounded with inhospitable terrain and elements, relying, like the pelican, on our instincts and sense of direction. In 'Effervescent Ascent', the solitary bird's wings personifies the momentum of the spirit, the soul...'rising above' earthly concerns. In a universal context, both bird tapestries address themselves to the concern of extinction of certain species and environments. This concept circles back to our own individual particular circumstances where troubling experiences and events nearly extinguish our spirit. Yet our spirit, our 'higher power', personified in the pelican in 'Coming Home' and the duck in 'Effervescent Ascent', will, like the phoenix, rise and soar again and again over the course of our lifetimes.
